Abstract
1) Background
@EN Understanding the school functioning of the mentally ill patients can provide a great deal of information about premorbid adjustment. The importance of the assessment of the school functioning is more evident in the military enrollment
examination
for its limitation of lacking the chance to observe and clarify entire clinical pictures. So the school records have been used as complementary information for the evaluation of psychiatric disturbances in the enrollment examination
The authors performed this study to investigate the characteristical differences of the school records between the psychotic psychiatric patients who were classified as the 5th, grade in enrollment examination and the neurotic patients classified
as the
2~4th, grade.
@ES 2) Method
@EN We selected the relatively homogeneous group in psychiatric patients who had been referred to the Armed Forces General Hospital for the purpose of further psychiatric examination, and analyzed data of gross behavioral development, scholastic
achievement and intelligent quotient by the school records at primary, middle and high school.
@ES Results
@EN The mean scores of music and art at primary school of the 5th. Grade group were significantly lower than those of the 2~4th, grade group. Regardless of the groups, the overall scholastic achievement at high school was much poorer than that at
middle
school.
@ES 4) Conclusion
@EN These results suggested that the psychotic patients group had some disturbances including difficulties in self-expression at early school age, and at the high school age the school functioning was worsened in psychiatric patients.
Considering these findings, the school records might be regarded as the helpful tool for assessing the school functioning in psychiatric patients.
